Day 10: 3/7/16

Today I learned about protein skimmers. Protein skimmers are used to extract organic waste materials from fish tanks. The waste material is converted into a foamy waste product that is collected and removed from the water column, so it doesn’t go back into the aquarium tanks. This is another way to help filter the system and keep it clean. Our job was to clean the skimmers. To do this we have to unscrew the filter. Then we can take the skimmer apart.

I also learned about artemia. Artemia is a species of brine shrimp. One of the amazing facts about this species is that it has not changed in 100 million years. Artemia is what gets fed to the really tiny fish, since the artemia are so small.
